Before the budget, the opposition raised Kanwar Yatra row in the all-party meeting

New Delhi:

Anticipation for the upcoming budget session of Parliament rose today as leaders gathered to discuss pressing issues and their expectations from the budget, which will be presented on July 23. Except the Trinamool Congress (TMC), all opposition parties were present in the meeting And called on the government to ensure that they can raise their issues in Parliament.

Congress leaders including Jairam Ramesh and K Suresh pushed for the appointment of a Deputy Speaker from the opposition in the Lok Sabha. Sources indicated that the Congress also raised objections over the NEET paper leak issue.

The YSR Congress, Janata Dal (United) and Biju Janata Dal (BJD) have strongly supported special category status for Andhra Pradesh, Bihar and Odisha respectively.

Another issue that figured prominently during the meeting was the controversy surrounding the Kanwar Yatra, an annual pilgrimage by devotees of Lord Shiva.

The controversy started when the Uttar Pradesh government issued an order to food establishments along the Kanwar Yatra route to display the names of their owners. The move, intended to ensure transparency and accountability, was perceived by many as a covert attempt to identify and potentially target Muslim-owned businesses.

The session began on Monday and will have 19 sittings till August 12 when the government is expected to introduce six bills, including one to replace the 90-year-old Aviation Act, and get parliamentary approval for the budget of Jammu and Kashmir, which is under central rule.

Finance Minister Nirmala Sitharaman will also present the Economic Survey in Parliament on Monday and will follow it with the Union Budget on Tuesday.
