Rahul Gandhi attacked Anurag Tagore

Akhilesh Yadav, who is a Congress ally, questioned how a person can highlight one’s caste.

New Delhi:

The debate over the demand for a caste census led by Leader of the Opposition Rahul Gandhi took a personal turn in the Lok Sabha on Tuesday when BJP MP Anurag Thakur said those whose caste is unknown were calling for enumeration.

Although Mr. Thakur did not take any names, Mr. Gandhi and the benches saw the remark as a jab at the Congress leader, who reacted strongly, saying that anyone who fights for the underprivileged is insulted and no amount of abuse can stop him.

Speaking in the Lok Sabha on Monday, Mr Gandhi used the traditional ‘halwa’ ceremony and the lack of diversity in the budget-making exercise to hit out at the government, prompting the BJP to retort that the Congress’ history was “full. With examples of barring reservations”.

Continuing the onslaught on Tuesday, Mr Thakur listed alleged scams under the Congress government and said in Hindi, “Rahul ji, you have spoken. ‘halwa’ (sweet). who were ‘halwa’ From the Bofors scam, from the Antriksha-Dewas scam, from the Commonwealth Games, from the National Herald, submarine, Augusta wasteland, 2G, coal, urea and fodder scams? Rahul Ji, was ‘halwa’ Sweet or tasteless? Some people talk about OBC, but their (Congress) OBC means ‘Only for Brother-Sister Commission’. This party will talk about other backward nations?

Still in his shrill tone he said, “Di ‘Prince’ (Prince) will give us from this party ‘knowledge’? First he needs to understand what LoP means – it is leader of opposition, not leader of campaign. I just want him to stop spreading lies. There is a lot of talk about OBCs and census. Whose race is unknown he is talking about the census?

As the statement caused an uproar in the Opposition Bench, the Leader of the Opposition intervened that he should be given an opportunity to speak as Mr. Tagore had insulted him.

“You can insult me as much as you want, do it every day. But don’t forget that we (the opposition) will pass the bill here (in Parliament),” Mr Gandhi asserted.

While an MP from the Treasury Bench shouted that this meant the Congress leader would also have to write down his caste, a defiant Mr Thakur said it seemed Mr Gandhi needed a note every time he wanted to intervene.

“You can’t do politics with a borrowed brain. You talk every time you get a note. You talk a little, then talk again when you get a note… What I said is that those who don’t do that. Learn about caste I took a name. No, but who stands to answer,” scoffed the BJP MP.

‘don’t ask for your forgiveness’

Given an opportunity to speak again, Mr Gandhi launched a broadside at the BJP and said anyone who spoke for and fought for Dalits, tribals and backward classes was insulted.

Using an example from the Mahabharata, Mr. Gandhi said that just as Arjuna could see the eye of the fish through which he wanted to shoot an arrow, he too could only see its target – Varna Shumari.

“Anurag Thakur insulted me, he abused me, but I don’t want an apology from him. I am fighting a battle and I will continue it. You insult me as much as you want, I don’t want an apology,” he said.

Samajwadi Party chief Akhilesh Yadav, a Congress ally and part of the Bharat Bloc, also backed Mr. Gandhi and asked how Mr. Tagore could come up with someone’s caste.

“He was a former minister. He spoke on many issues. How can you ask about someone’s caste? You can’t do that,” he fumed.

The BJP MP countered that Mr Gandhi’s father and former Prime Minister Rajiv Gandhi opposed OBC reservation while today’s Congress wants a caste census. “You have to decide whether he is right or you are right. Was your party wrong, or you wrong? Was he against the OBCs or were you for them?” he asked.
