Kolkata’s top police should be questioned? Grassroots leaders disagreed
Trinamool leader Sukhendu Roy has raised serious questions about the conduct of the investigation.

Controversy has erupted within the Trinamool Congress (TMC) following the brutal rape and murder of a 31-year-old doctor at Kolkata’s RG Kar Medical College and Hospital. Central to this argument is whether Calcutta Police Commissioner Vineet Goyal should be interrogated in custody.
Sukhendu Shekhar Roy, a senior TMC leader and Rajya Sabha MP, raised serious questions about the conduct of the probe. In a recent statement on X (formerly Twitter), Mr Roy expressed his displeasure over the handling of the case, calling for a custodial interrogation of both Dr Sandeep Ghosh, former principal of RG Kar Medical College, and Commissioner Goyal.
“CBI must do justice. Ex-principal and police commissioner should be interrogated in custodial who and why floated suicide story. Why hall walls were broken, who patronized Roy to be so strong, why sniffer dogs were used after 3 days. 100 Ask them questions like this,” Mr. Ray posted.
Commissioner Goyal’s call for an inquiry, however, was not universally accepted within the party. Kunal Ghosh, another prominent leader of Trinamool strongly opposed this claim.
“I am also demanding trial in RG tax case but strongly oppose this demand regarding CP. After getting information, he tried his best. Personally, CP was doing his job, and the investigation was in positive focus. Such a post is unfortunate, that too from my senior leader. from,” said Mr. Ghosh.

Mr Roy was one of the first TMC leaders to announce his participation in the nationwide midnight protest against rape and murder. He made the announcement at X in solidarity with the protesters.
“Tomorrow I am going to join the protesters, especially because like millions of Bengali families I have a daughter and a young granddaughter. We must rise to the occasion. Enough of cruelty to women. Let us resist together. Whatever,” Mr. Posted by Ray.
But Mr. Roy’s position has sparked speculation about his position within the party. When a user on X questioned the possible consequences of his actions, including possible expulsion from the Trinamool Congress, Mr. Roy replied: “Please don’t worry about my fate. The blood of a freedom fighter flows in my veins. I am at least bored.”
Trinamool leader Santanu Sen had earlier leveled allegations against Dr Ghosh. Mr Sen, who is also a doctor, recently claimed that he had been removed as party spokesperson – a move he sees as punishment for his outspoken criticism. “I have not spoken against the party or any leader,” Mr. Sen said, expressing dismay at what he saw as “a dedicated and true soldier of the party” being unfairly sidelined, while others who defected were treated with respect.
The Central Bureau of Investigation (CBI) is questioning Dr Ghosh, the former principal of RG Kar Medical College, who resigned days after the doctor’s body was discovered. Dr. Ghosh has been interrogated multiple times, with sessions extending late into the night, and is under intense scrutiny as the investigation continues.
