Prime Minister Narendra Modi-led Cabinet Committee on Economic Affairs on Monday approved a new project that will ensure “shortest rail link between Mumbai and Indore”.

The new line will improve connectivity to the aspiring district of Barwani and provide access to nearly 1,000 villages and a population of around 30 lakh.
According to a government press release, the project will boost tourism in the region by offering a short route between the western and southwestern parts of the country and central India, increasing tourist attendance at various tourist and religious sites in the Ujjain-Indore region. Moreover, the project will directly connect the Pithampur auto cluster, which has 90 large units and 700 small and medium industries, with JNPA’s gateway port and other state ports.
It will provide direct connectivity to the millet-producing districts of Madhya Pradesh and onion-producing districts of Maharashtra, which will facilitate the distribution of these products in the northern and southern parts of the country.
This route is very important for transportation of various commodities including agricultural produce, fertilizers, containers, iron ore, steel, cement and POL. The capacity expansion works are expected to result in additional freight traffic of around 26 MTPA (million tonnes per annum).
