Saina Nehwal opens up about ‘thoughts’ of retirement after battling arthritis
Star India shuttler Saina Nehwal has revealed that she is struggling with arthritis, which could put her career in trouble. He revealed that his knee problem has been troublesome and has limited his ability to train. The star shuttler may even consider retiring later this year for the same reason. Nehwal created history by becoming the first Indian to win an Olympic medal in the badminton category. She won a bronze medal in the women’s singles category at the London Olympics 2012.
“The knee is not very good. I have arthritis. My cartilage is gone. It’s very difficult to push for 8-9 hours. How do you challenge the best players in the world in that condition? I think. I have to accept it somewhere because the highest level. 2 hours of training is not enough to play with the players and get the desired results,” Saina said on India’s chef de mission Gagan Narang’s House of Glory podcast. Nehwal has not played competitive badminton since the Singapore Open last year. He is also considering retirement at the end of the year as he battles arthritis. Although, he did not reveal it fully, but admitted to a short career as a sports personality.
“I’m thinking about it too. It would be sad because it’s like a job that a normal person does. Obviously, a sports person’s career is always short. I started when I was 9. I’ll be 35 next year. So, I’m very proud that What I did and what I think this year,” he said.

The Padma Shri awardee has had a decorated career with two gold medals at the Commonwealth Games in 2010 and 2018. Despite his recent struggles, Nehwal has expressed pride in representing his country at a global level However, he was also upset about not being able to compete in the Olympics again, which had been his childhood dream.
“Competing in the Olympics is a childhood dream for everyone. You prepare for years to reach that level. So, a lot of times, when you realize you can’t do it, it hurts a lot. Because it’s not like you. Don’t want to play, but your body says you’re not doing well and you have an injury.”
“But I worked very hard. I competed in three Olympics. I gave my 100% in all of them. I can be proud of it and happy about it,” he added.
